![]() ![]() Chinese writings do not indicate an Air element per se, but the idea of Qi has close affiliations with air.In these spells, Shu’s name is invoked for protection. Shu played a role in creating Egyptian spells intended to protect the dead as they moved toward the afterlife. He was married to the goddess of moisture (rain/water). Egyptians worshiped a God of Air named Shu.Hinduism places air as one of the five major elements which are associated with Vayu, a father God whose name means wind.Western minds were not alone in pondering the element of Air and its significance. The Golden Dawn system of magic placed Air in the eastern quarter of the magic circle. There are also the air elementals called sylphs, what we often call the fey. Raphael, for example, is the archangel of Air, while Air’s ruler is Aral. All four elements had spiritual beings associated with them. In the late 1800s, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn integrated classical Greek elements into its practices, including Air. Aristotle wrote that Air is both hot and wet because it’s between fire and water in the elemental spheres of reality. The upper air, aether, was tied to the soul and the human psyche. The Greeks separated air into two designations, one for the lower atmosphere and the other for the upper. Greek philosophy and Western alchemical practices both feature Air as one of the four key elements in the world. While very generalized, this gives you some ideas for creative adaptation. Wind Directions (Movements) and AssociationsĮnergy: Strong foundations for a new projectĮnergy: Effective communication in relationshipsĮnergy: Thinking clearly in an emotional situationĮnergy: Supporting intimate relationships This makes such a wind ideal for written or verbal discussions requiring an even ground on which to begin. If the wind turns toward the North, it then begins moving into earth energy, providing foundations and growth. First, the originating eastern wind is associated with inceptions, the mind, and communication. Let’s consider the four cardinal points and how each corresponds to unique air energies. Since we already have correspondences for the cardinal directions, we can use those associations as a means of determining the energy of various winds and how they would affect our magic. The area from which each gust flows, and where it moves toward, both have great symbolic significance. The beauty of wind is that it has defined direction. Wind Movement in Air MagicĪir energy (specifically wind) into your various magickal modalities isn’t difficult. All those sounds create energy ripples moving outward toward manifestation. We also use this combination when drumming to raise energy, singing communal mantras, saying prayers or playing magical music with a theme that mirrors your intent. We use sounds and air in magic every time we speak a spell, recite a charm, vocalize an affirmation, etc. While it’s true that sound can move through other media like water, most humans experience directly through air. It also has a role to play in meditation (metered breathing) and in sound magic, since sound waves travel on vibrating air molecules. The basic magical associations for air are intelligence, our ability to communicate, movement, conscious awareness, creativity, knowledge, renewal and new beginnings. Nonetheless, Air is crucial to life itself. Guided by the headlight of curiosity, we alight on the sparks of insight that help us put the pieces of our inner puzzle together as we begin to make sense of our lives and rediscover the hidden crystal of self-trust that awaits us in the dark caverns.“A great wind is blowing, and that gives you either imagination or a headache.”īecause we don’t see it, most people don’t think much about air. For me and for thousands of people who have gone through my courses, inner work feels more like an adventure and a process of discovery, a journey through the labyrinth of Self that includes hidden pathways and mysterious caves. Part of the resistance people feel to committing to the daily practices is that they imagine it’s going to feel like drudgery. True work may be challenging, like raking up a pile of leaves, but it leaves you feeling accomplished, inspired, and satisfied. But true work – work that fuels your soul – is closer to play. We think of the endless hours in boring classes watching the hours tick by or the endless hours sitting at a desk waiting for five o’clock. We think of work as boredom and drudgery, as something we have to get through in order to do what we really want to do. The problem is that most people have a negative association with the word work.
